Aurillac is a thousand-year-old town with a rich architectural heritage. Ahistorical tour will enable you to meet the attractions of the old town: the abbey church of Saint-Géraud, the remains of a former Benedictine abbey, the Romanesque façade with arcades and colonnettes of the abbey hospital of Saint-Géraud, the Renaissance-style Hôtel des Consuls, mullioned windows and adorned with sculptures, the chapelle d’Aurinques, built under Henri IV in the 16th century, and the famous Place du Square, ideal for strolling and relaxing, are all places to admire along the way.

Near the pleasant jardin des Carmes, it’s the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie that you can visit. Housed in the former 17th-century convent of the Visitandines, in addition to its archaeology and fine arts collections, the museum features a reconstruction of a traditional Cantalien interior, a collection of contemporary photographs, and an area devoted to the local umbrella industry.

Then head to the heights of the town to discover the medieval castle of Saint-Étienne and its Muséum des Volcans, a fascinating site on the volcanic history of the Cantal and the mysteries of planet Earth, featuring a permanent collection of rocks, minerals and naturalised animals. After your visit, don’t hesitate to take a stroll in the pretty park below the château, where you’ll have a wonderful panoramic view of the town!

As for events, if you’re a fan of the street arts, don’t miss the international street theatre festival, which brings the town to life for 4 days at the end of August.

In terms of souvenirs, don’t forget to buy an umbrella, an emblematic Aurillac object that has conquered the luxury industry and been exported all over the world!

This emblematic summit has been developed in line with the principles of sustainable development, reconciling the preservation of the landscape, the ‘spirit of the place’, the quality of the public welcome and the participation of local residents and partners in the life of the site. These years of commitment to the landscape have earned the Puy Mary the right to join the twenty or so labelled sites in the prestigious Grands Sites de France network, first awarded in 2012 and renewed in 2019.

Did you know? The name Puy Mary is thought to have come from Marius, a disciple of Saint Austremoine, the first evangeliser of Auvergne.

From the Pas de Peyrol pass, it takes thirty minutes (195m ascent)* on foot to reach the orientation table located at the summit of Puy Mary. A path with steps and risers provides access to an extraordinary panoramic view of the stratovolcano: its radiating glacial valleys, roughly triangular-shaped summer pasture plateaux and rocky puys…

On the way back down to the col, the Maison de site (site centre) offers visitors the chance to decipher this landscape through a video and appreciate the richness of the site thanks to a range of summer events.

A must-see! A real architectural gem, listed as one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’…

The village of Salers is a journey through time. Houses with turrets, belfry, ramparts… Salers takes you back in time to the Middle Ages and then to the Renaissance.

Salers did not escape invasion during the Hundred Years’ War, and it was against this backdrop that the “Sagraniers" fortified their town to protect themselves from the English and brigands. A merchant town and then a town of nobles, Salers’ past grandeur is reflected in its architecture, which dates from the 14th to 18th centuries, mainly from the time of the Bailliage des Hautes Montagnes d’Auvergne. Each alleyway contains old houses, all in a perfect state of preservation.

Pass the Beffroi or the Martille Gate, and you enter the upper town. In the main square, the statue of Tyssandier d’Escous, the renovator of the Salers cattle breed, reminds you that you are in the land of red cows. The church, remodelled in the 15th and 19th centuries, houses a magnificent 15th-century tomb with nine life-size figures, as well as numerous paintings, tapestries and antique statues.

Take the time to walk to the Barrouze esplanade to admire the landscape and the Maronne and Aspre valleys…

Listed as one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’, Tournemire and its imposing castle dominate the verdant Doire valley.

In the past, the rival houses of the Tournemire and Anjony fought for supremacy through iron and the courts. The battle ended at the dawn of the 17th century with the defeat of the Tournemire lords, whose castle is now nothing but ruins. The Anjony castle, on the other hand, survives as one of the jewels of medieval military architecture, inspired by the royal keeps. Built in the 15th century, this massive building is made up of four towers enclosing a square keep.

As you drive through the village, take note of the houses with their slate roofs and old door lintels and window frames. Some are built of imposing stones from the old castle. The small composite church, built of polychrome volcanic tufa, contains a precious reliquary containing a thorn from the crown of Christ, brought back by Pierre de Tournemire during his crusade in 1095….
